The co-op opened up a lamb order so I was able to get more lamb ribs and lamb shoulder. It is from the same local farm as the last lamb we got so I'm happy! Next time I may have to order some stuff for us since it's all slaughtered and packaged for human consumption!
The elk order will open next week. I'm thinking about ordering 120 lbs. of the elk so we can feed it more often. I still have 60 lbs. of the deer from last year that I need to get out and thaw. From what I've heard, the elk is more what I'm wanting. The raw co-op I belong to now has a website where we can place orders.
Yahoo decided to "improve" the groups by making them more like a Facebook site. Unfortunately, they didn't bother to test any of the changes to see if they even worked and switched some users over and not others. I was one of the unlucky ones that got switched. For quite a while I couldn't see anything on the groups. Then I could see posts but not post or respond. It's still such a mess that none of us unlucky people can save records to the databases which means we can't order. They just got the site up last evening and shortly after that I received my password so I can place orders! We stopped feeding tripe to Chance. She really liked it but boy did it give her room-clearing gas! I'm talking gas that made her leave the room!! We figure we'll give her a little bit infrequently as a nice treat until we use it up.
I've got Chance's Montana trip food all figured out and bagged up. We can't be sure that there will be unenhanced meat close by so we end up hauling 16+ lbs. of food out for her in a 5-day cooler. Chance needed some non-lamb organs and heart so I headed to the Japanese market.
Pork spleen was on short sale so I bought all of that they had, a couple of pounds each of beef and pork livers, beef and pork kidneys and a pound of pork brains. Chance is set for the next 3-4 months for organ variety. I bought 4 pig hearts and was disappointed they didn't have any beef heart. I also splurged on a rabbit because she likes rabbit. I made an impulse purchase through the co-op. 5 lbs. of frozen ground green tripe. I don't feed ground meats but I thought Chance might enjoy a little of green tripe mixed in with her joint supplements. And I could order it by the 5-lb. bag instead of by a half or whole case. Chance thought it smelled so good she knocked the bag out of my hand and started nibbling away. It doesn't really add anything to her diet but she doesn't eat enough of it for us to have to sacrifice any red meat. It's more of a treat. CALF RIBS
The calf ribs were much smaller than we thought they would be so we had plenty of room. We still ended up with over 19.25 lbs. of ribs though. And with as bony as they are that 19.25 lbs. will last a while. That was my 1st experience with unloading the truck, sorting the boxes and labeling orders. We had a lot of people there so 70 cases took less than 30 minutes. I would definitely order calf ribs again. LAMB CO-OP ORDER The week before last there was an unexpected co-op lamb database. The lamb supplier had some extra lamb to offer us. It was only open for 2 days! The lamb is from a farm only 70 miles from our house. All the lamb is grass fed and finished from a certified humane farm that farms to organic standards. It is slaughtered at an Oregon Tilth certified slaughter house and all meat is intended for human consumption. What we got was all packed in April as well so nice and fresh. Delivery was supposed to be last Thursday but the woman who picked the lamb up didn't have room in her freezers for the Oregon people's lamb so we ended up getting our lamb last Monday! I ordered 10 lbs. of "Denver" lamb ribs and 15 lbs. of boneless lamb shoulder and got 9.31 lbs. of ribs and almost 17 lbs. of shoulder. I knew how much I owed so I was confused when my total from the co-op was higher than it should be. Long story short, there was a missing rack of ribs for my order, a search was done and it was found in a different person's order. So we have 1.67 lbs. of ribs coming to us sometime this week. Chance will be very happy because she is loving this lamb! The lamb is so nice that we are going to order some lamb for ourselves when the next database opens. March 9 began Chance's 2nd year as a raw fed dog. This has been the best decision we have ever made for Chance!
My 1st raw co-op order of the year is calf ribs. The database opened late last night. The order gets shipped to a location nearby so I can pick it up there and don't have to pay any extra money for a gas donation for transport. This will be the 1st beef bones Chance will have and because they are soft calf bones they will be totally edible! Delivery is expected the 1st week of April! Not too long ago we went to every other day bone-in meals. Chance has been doing great and it makes raw feeding so much simpler!
But I've started noticing on days when she gets pork ribs she starts doing a lot of licking starting about 8 hours after she eats breakfast. She then has a problem keeping dinner down. These are the same ribs she's always eaten with no problems, bone content isn't a problem since she eats bonier meals of other proteins just fine and she doesn't do it on with boneless pork days. So now when we feed pork ribs we end up having to give her a light snack. Doesn't have to be much but it seems to help her out a lot. Finally got the elk trim taken care of and now know the easy way to do the identical 60-lb. block of deer trim! Love this elk trim. Looks to be mainly from the leg so it's like nice meat packages encased in sinew with some tendons and other connective tissue. Chance loves the fresh tendons and we love seeing her take 20 or 30 chews to get a piece of meat off!
Making plans for co-op orders for this year. A supplier is now offering calf rib slabs so will definitely be getting those. Will be nice to have not only some beef bones that are safe for Chance to have but also calf to give her since the calf will have different levels of vitamins and mineral than an adult cow. Will be getting more of the elk and/or deer depending on freezer space and what we have the least of. And thinking about getting some Emu if the supplier offers rib racks. March 9 will mark the 1-year anniversary of the switch to prey model raw. 2012 was Chance's healthiest year ever with her only going to the vet once to have a lump checked and once for her annual checkup. Chance had to go to the vet on December 7 to have a small lump looked at. This was the visit we told the clinic that Chance was raw fed.
The vet tech did not understand Chance's diet at all. She said several times she didn't understand. She also seemed pretty freaked out by the idea. The clinic has 5 vets on staff and this was our 1st time with this vet. She is British and had absolutely no problem at all with raw diets. She asked how long Chance has been raw fed and how she was doing on it. Her dog has some food problems and she was glad to hear that Chance's problems while eating commercial foods have pretty much cleared up. We've decided she'll be the vet we request from now on. Had to pick up more brains for Chance so I went to the Japanese market. Bought 2 lbs. of pork brains and picked up some more pork spleen. I decided to splurge and bought some pork kidney, pork tongues and a pork heart.
